The centre of Milan is easy to cover on foot: the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and the Castello Sforzesco are all within a few blocks. The coach is there for everything else, which means bringing the group into the centre from the hotel (often in Rho, Sesto or near Malpensa), linking the centre with the outer districts and taking everyone back without the metro at rush hour. That is why, for a group, a tour bus in Milan works as a private vehicle at your disposal for the day, not as a sightseeing loop with fixed stops.
Here we describe how we build a one-day tour with our coach and bus hire service in Milan, starting from where a coach can actually stop. Visit lengths and entry times are set by your bookings; we take care of the vehicle, the stops and the transfers between them.
First of all: what day is it
In Milan the day of the week changes the logistics more than the route does. Area C, the city centre charging zone, operates Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30, public holidays excluded. On weekdays the coach pays the entry ticket, which for NCC vehicles (noleggio con conducente, hire with driver) depends on the length of the vehicle and includes 5 hours of parking in the bays reserved for coaches. On Saturdays and Sundays entry is free, but parking is charged by the hour.
We plan around this. On a weekday we try to fit the walking part in the centre within the five hours of included parking; at the weekend it makes more sense to cut down the hours the coach spends parked in a paid area. Every zone, from the coach parking areas around Area C outwards, has its own rates and rules.
Tour bus in Milan, morning in the centre: Castello, Duomo and La Scala
The most used drop-off point for the centre is Piazza Castello, where there are bays reserved for tour coaches to pick up and drop off. The group gets off in front of the Castello Sforzesco and walks along via Dante towards the Duomo, the Galleria and La Scala. The alternative on the opposite side is via Marina, next to the Porta Venezia gardens, which suits groups starting from the fashion district (the Quadrilatero della Moda).
Once the group is off, the coach leaves the centre and goes to one of the paid parking areas for tour coaches designated by the City Council. For the pick-up it returns to the drop-off bay, or to another one if the group ends the morning in a different area. We give the pick-up point to the group leader before they get off.
Lunch and the transfer to the districts outside the Cerchia
Lunch is the right moment to use the coach. Getting out of the Cerchia dei Bastioni (the ring road around the old city walls) to a different district by metro often means changing lines and counting the group on every platform; by coach it is a single transfer, with the group seated.
If the group has spent the morning at Santa Maria delle Grazie or around Sant’Ambrogio, the City Council also designates short-stop bays for tour coaches in that part of the city. The same rule applies here: the coach stops only to let people on and off.
Afternoon: contemporary Milan and the surrounding area
The second part of the day usually shows a different city. These are the places we suggest most often, chosen partly because they have a coach area nearby on the City Council list:
- Porta Nuova and piazza Gae Aulenti, with the parking area near the Garibaldi metro station;
- the Cimitero Monumentale, with a long-stay parking area near the Monumentale metro station;
- the San Siro stadium and the CityLife district, for sports or corporate groups;
- the Abbazia di Chiaravalle, south of the city: we agree the coach stopping point before departure.
The City Council list is published in a document that is not recent, so before the service we check that the chosen area is still in use. For San Siro and CityLife we check access from the address, as we do for every venue we do not know in detail.
Half a day in the city, half outside
Many groups, especially those staying in Milan for two or three days, prefer a single afternoon in the centre and the rest of the day out of town. In that case the coach is essential: Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Bergamo Alta and Franciacorta are day-trip destinations, well suited to group day trips by coach from Milan.
For guests arriving by air the tour can start straight from the airport: the group transfer from Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio takes the group to the hotel or the centre, with the luggage in the hold. Malpensa is about 50 km from Milan and in the morning the journey can take an hour or more, so it is better not to book a timed visit straight after landing.
Which vehicle to choose for a Milan tour
Our Lainate base, open since September 2025, runs its own vehicles, all Euro 6, so there are no emission class checks to make for access to Area B and Area C.
For 40-56 people we use the Gran Turismo. Below 25 people a minibus is more practical in the narrow bays of the centre and pays the lower Area C ticket if it is no longer than 8 metres: for minibus hire with driver we have vehicles from 16 to 27 seats.
A tour that is part of a corporate programme or a convention is coordinated with the rest of the logistics, using the same method we apply to bus hire for events in Milan.
How to request a quote for a coach tour of Milan
Tell us the date, the number of participants, the hotel or starting point, the places you want to see with any bookings, and the return time. If the group has a guide, tell us where they will meet. We send you a written quote with the vehicle, the route and the drop-off and pick-up points; for a rough idea of costs there is our price guide to coach hire in Milan.
Agencies get dedicated terms for coaches for tour operators and DMCs in Milan.
Phone: +39 06 4882027. Email: info@toddebus.it (subject line: “Milan”). If the programme continues in Rome, our via Ugo Forti base also runs the coach tour of Rome for groups.
Frequently asked questions
Where does a group travelling by coach get off to visit the Duomo di Milano?
Usually in Piazza Castello, where there are bays for tour coaches to pick up and drop off, and from there the group walks to the Duomo. The alternative is via Marina, near the Porta Venezia gardens.
Can the coach wait for the group in the centre?
No, the bays in the centre are only for getting on and off. The coach goes to one of the parking areas for tour coaches designated by the City Council and comes back at the agreed time.
Is it worth doing the Milan tour at the weekend?
On Saturdays and Sundays Area C is not active, so the coach does not pay the entry charge. Parking in the coach areas is still charged by the hour, whereas on weekdays the first 5 hours are included in the ticket.
Can a Milan tour be combined with a lake trip on the same day?
You can spend half a day in the city and half at the lake, but the time at the lake is shorter. For Lake Como or Lake Maggiore we usually recommend a dedicated day.
Is a coach tour suitable for a corporate group in town for a trade fair?
Yes, we can organise it in the evening or on the free day after the fair, starting from the hotels around Rho. Tell us when the stand closes and we plan the tour around it.
