In Milan the real issue with a tour coach is not getting into the centre so much as knowing where to leave it. The city has no dedicated permit system like Rome: the coach pays the Area C ticket like any other vehicle, at its own rates, and then has to find a space in one of the few reserved areas. If you are bringing a group to the Duomo or the Castello Sforzesco, you need to decide beforehand where the group gets off and where the coach goes in the hours that follow, because coach parking in the centre is scarce.
From our operating base in Lainate, active since September 2025, we run coach and bus hire in Milan every week, with services that enter the Cerchia dei Bastioni, the ring of the old city walls. Here we set out the rules published by the Comune di Milano (the city council), updated to 2026.
Area C for tour buses: hours and ticket price
Area C is the restricted traffic zone in the city centre, controlled by electronic gates that read number plates. It operates all year round from Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 19:30, public holidays excluded. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays entry is free.
For NCC vehicles (noleggio con conducente, the licensed hire-with-driver category) with more than nine seats, which includes our minibuses and coaches, the daily ticket price depends on the length of the vehicle:
| NCC bus with more than 9 seats | Area C daily ticket |
|---|---|
| Up to 8 metres | €60.00 |
| From 8.01 to 10.50 metres | €97.50 |
| Over 10.50 metres | €150.00 |
The ticket is valid for the whole day: the same vehicle can enter and leave as many times as needed. It is bought and activated online on the MyAreaC portal by midnight of the day after entry, or at a parking meter with activation on the same day. For school groups up to lower secondary school (pupils up to about 14) on an educational outing in Milan there is a reduced ticket of €7.50, available online only. Current rates are on the Area C page of the Comune di Milano website.
Five hours of parking included in the ticket
The detail many organisers do not know: the Area C ticket for buses includes 5 hours of free parking in the areas reserved for coaches, Monday to Friday. To use them, the driver enters the PIN code received when the ticket was activated into the parking meter of the area.
In practice, if the group gets off in the centre at 09:30 and we pick them up at 14:00, parking in the coach area is already paid for. Beyond five hours, or on days when Area C is not active, parking is charged by the hour. This is why, on weekday programmes, we try to fit the walking part of the day into a window that stays within those five hours.
Coach parking at Bastioni di Porta Venezia and other areas
The paid areas for long-stay coach parking are listed by the city on its tourism portal (YesMilano): they are areas reserved for tour buses, spread across different parts of the city. The rate given is €8 per hour.
The areas closest to the Cerchia dei Bastioni are convenient for the centre and for the fashion district, the Quadrilatero della Moda, but they have few spaces. On a spring morning full of school trips and groups you may find them full: the driver needs to have an alternative in mind already, chosen according to where the group will have lunch.
The city also publishes a longer list, with areas near metro stations (Repubblica, Porta Vittoria, Pagano, Monumentale, Garibaldi, Bignami, Famagosta) and the closed area at Trenno. It is an old document, so before relying on a specific area we check that it is available.
Where to pick up and drop off the group in the centre
Inside Area C, near the most visited sights, there are quick-turnover bays: the coach stops only long enough for passengers to get on and off, then leaves for a parking area. The two reference points for the centre are Piazza Castello and via Marina, by the Porta Venezia gardens. The city list also includes other short-stop bays in the centre, with rules that vary from one spot to another.
The group has to get off quickly: no roll call on the pavement, no group photo in front of the coach. Before arrival the group leader repeats where and when everyone meets again, and we give the exact pick-up point, which is often different from the drop-off point. Meeting point, timings and a contact number for the group leader are the core of any checklist for a group coach trip, and participants should have them before departure.
Area B: emission limits and the blind spot rule
Area B covers almost the whole city and operates Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 19:30. Vehicles that are allowed in do not pay, but the bans for buses follow a timetable based on emission class: the oldest diesels are already excluded, and from 1 October 2030 the restrictions will also affect some Euro VI vehicles, with exemptions linked to the year of registration.
Since 2023 the city has also banned buses from Area B if they lack systems that warn the driver of pedestrians and cyclists in the blind spot, and it requires the number plate to be registered on the Area B website. The vehicles at our Milan base are all Euro 6: for organisers this means not having to check the vehicle’s class and equipment before every service. The full timetable of bans is on the Area B page of the Comune di Milano website.
How to use these rules in your programme
Two identical groups, 50 people visiting the Duomo and the Castello, can have different parking costs simply because of the day they choose. On a Tuesday the coach pays the Area C ticket and uses the five hours of parking included; on a Saturday it pays nothing to enter, but parking in the coach areas is charged by the hour. Traffic is different in the two cases too, and we take that into account when setting the departure time. For agencies bringing several groups in the same week we have dedicated terms for coach hire for tour operators and DMCs.
A full day, with the drop-off points and the sights outside the Cerchia, is best planned as a Milan coach tour designed for groups.
If the group is small, a vehicle up to 8 metres pays the lowest ticket: based on the seating capacity of our vehicles we choose with you a minibus with driver in Milan of the right size.
Groups arriving by air start instead with a transfer from Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio, which often takes them straight to their hotel in the centre.
How to request a quote for a tour coach in Milan
Send us the date, the number of passengers, the starting point (hotel, station, airport), the places you want to visit and the return time. Tell us if it is a school group, because the Area C ticket is different. The written quote states the vehicle, the route and the drop-off and pick-up points, because these are what drive the cost of coach hire in Milan.
Phone: +39 06 4882027. Email: info@toddebus.it (subject line: “Milan”) to reach our local contact. In Rome the rules are different: the centre has its own ZTL, permits and parking areas for tour buses.
