School transport in Milan for private and international schools

Contents

For many private and international schools in Milan, the catchment area does not stop at the ring road. Pupils come from the city, but also from Monza, Brianza, the Sempione corridor and the south of Milan, and every morning families queue on the ring roads and arterial routes to reach the same gate. A school transport service in Milan run by a private company moves the problem from the families to a supplier who solves it with fixed routes and timetables.

Since September 2025 we have had an operational base in Lainate, north-west of Milan, with vehicles we own rather than sub-hire, which we use for bus and coach hire in Milan. Below we go into the detail of a service that runs for the whole school year.

Why the Lainate base matters for a daily service

A service that repeats every morning for the whole school year depends on the distance between the depot and the first pick-up point. Our vehicles for Lombardy leave from Lainate, not from Rome: the first run does not rely on a long positioning trip, and a replacement vehicle comes from the same base.

In Rome we have provided this service for years under multi-year contracts, and in Milan we apply the same method: a local contact, routes planned on the real roads, written rules for the unexpected. To reach our Milan contact directly, just put “Milan” in the email subject line.

Area B, Area C and Euro 6 vehicles

Anyone driving a minibus or bus into Milan every day has to deal with Area B, Area C and coach parking, which are governed by City Council measures. Area B is Milan’s low emission zone and Area C its congestion charge zone. All the vehicles at our Milan base are Euro 6: that is the first point to check against the rules in force when designing a route that enters the city.

The environmental side also has an administrative angle. We are ISO 14001:2015 certified and, on request, we provide emissions data per kilometre, useful for schools that publish a sustainability report.

Two service models: door to door or pick-up points

Door to door makes sense for younger children and when families are concentrated in a few neighbourhoods. With addresses scattered across the city and the suburbs it becomes long: every extra stop adds to the time on board for those picked up first.

The second model uses pick-up points. For example, a stop near a Passante (the suburban rail link) or metro station, which families can reach in a few minutes, and from there the minibus goes straight to school. For schools outside the city, a pick-up point in the centre can replace dozens of car journeys. Our minibuses with driver range from 16 to 27 seats.

An example of the calculation: if the school opens at 08:30 and the pick-up point is half an hour away on a normal morning, setting departure at 08:00 is not enough in weeks of rain or roadworks. Better to leave earlier and arrive a few minutes ahead than have half the class come in late.

What to put in the contract with the supplier

An annual school transport contract goes beyond a list of routes. It is worth setting out the service levels in writing: the expected punctuality, how and how quickly a broken-down vehicle is replaced, who informs whom in case of delay, and how changes to the calendar are handled.

On some points we can already tell you how we work. Seat belts are fitted on every seat of the vehicles we use for schools. Drivers hold a category D licence, an up-to-date CQC (the professional driver qualification card) and specific training for transporting minors; for international families we can assign an English-speaking driver. An escort on board is not included in the standard service and we assess it with the school, usually for the youngest children. Our in-house workshop and replacement vehicles cover breakdowns.

It is up to the school to decide the rule for handing over a child at the afternoon stop, meaning who can collect them and what happens if nobody is there. It has to be communicated to families before the start of the year. It is also one of the questions for choosing a coach hire company when comparing several offers.

School outings and activities with the same supplier

With an annual contract in place, the school can use the same supplier for swimming, sports, tournaments and educational outings, without looking for a new company each time. The vehicles and drivers are ones the pupils and teachers already know.

For day trips out of town, Lombardy has several destinations suited to school classes that can be reached by coach.

For school excursions and trips from Milan we plan each individual outing, from the choice of vehicle to the stops.

Every school outing by coach requires certain documents for the vehicle and the driver, and the rules on school trips allow the school to request a check by the Polizia Stradale (the traffic police) before departure.

How to request a quote for school transport in Milan

To prepare a proposal we need the number of pupils with their towns or neighbourhoods of residence, the start and finish times day by day, the school calendar, afternoon activities and whether an escort is required. With this information we design the routes and choose the vehicles. The cost depends on kilometres, hours of service and number of vehicles; our coach hire prices in Milan give a rough idea for full-day hire.

For a service starting in September it is best to talk in spring: there is time to collect sign-ups from families and test the routes. In the capital we have run school transport for international schools for years, under multi-year contracts.

Frequently asked questions

How many months ahead should a private school bus be organised for September?

It is best to start in spring. It takes a few weeks to collect addresses and sign-ups, design the routes and test them before the first day of school.

Can private school transport also serve the towns around Milan?

Yes. Starting from Lainate we can build routes that pick up pupils in the city and in the towns around Milan, with door-to-door stops or pick-up points.

Can school shuttle minibuses enter Area C?

Access rules depend on the Comune di Milano measures for each vehicle category. The vehicles at our Milan base are all Euro 6; the current conditions should always be checked on the City Council website.

Can we have an English-speaking driver for an international school?

Yes, on request we assign an English-speaking driver. It helps when families or school staff communicate mainly in English.

Does the service also cover Saturday outings and evening returns?

Yes. We work 7 days a week, public holidays included, at any time, so open days, Saturday tournaments and evening returns can be included in the same contract.
