The reception is at a villa overlooking the water, reached by a road that runs along the lake and leaves little room for a coach. Holding these pieces together is the job of the guest shuttle, which we organise with the vehicles of our bus and coach rental in Milan.

Our wedding coach hire in Milan covers weddings all over Lombardy. Here we focus on two specific areas, Lake Como and Franciacorta, and on the local rules that change the way things are organised. The vehicles leave from our Lainate base, operating since September 2025.

Como town: the rules for tour coach pick-up and drop-off

If guests are staying in Como or the ceremony is in a church in the centre, you need to know the council’s rules for tour coaches. According to the Comune di Como page on tour coach access to the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato, the restricted traffic zone), coaches may enter the zone only to carry guests of hotels located inside it or right next to it. A free authorisation is required, to be obtained before entering or within 48 hours, and the vehicle must follow one of the two set routes.

Inside the ZTL the only permitted stop is in Piazza Cavour, for a maximum of 15 minutes, the time needed to let passengers and luggage on or off without obstructing public transport. Stopping along the route is not allowed. For a wedding this means that boarding outside the hotel has to be well prepared: if 50 people come down from their rooms in dribs and drabs, the 15 minutes run out before the coach is full.

The practical advice is to set the meeting time in the lobby 10 minutes before the vehicle arrives and to have guests with luggage come down first. While waiting between runs the coach does not stay in the centre: it moves to the short-stop bay in Viale Innocenzo XI, with the engine switched off, or to the long-stay areas in Piazza Atleti Azzurri d’Italia and Via Regina Teodolinda.

The lake shores: narrow roads and villas on the water

Outside the town, the problem becomes the road. The reception villas along the shores, between Cernobbio, Tremezzo, Bellagio and Varenna, look onto roads that run between the lake and the mountains, with narrow stretches through the villages and little room to stop. A 56-seat Gran Turismo coach can drive them, but it cannot always pull up outside the villa gate.

That is why we check access from the address before proposing a vehicle. The solutions are the same ones we use for hard-to-reach venues: 16-27 seat minibuses that get right up to the entrance, or a transfer point where the coach drops the guests and a smaller vehicle shuttles back and forth. The minibus with driver we use in Milan also gets into historic centres and courtyards.

If the programme includes a boat crossing, for example the ceremony in one village and the reception at a villa on the opposite shore, the coach times are tied to the boat times. We need to know this when we prepare the quote, because it changes where the guests are picked up.

Franciacorta: country houses and wineries among the vineyards

In Franciacorta the reception is often held at a winery or a country house among the vineyards. Access is by gravel drives or country lanes, and the car parks are designed for people arriving by car. Here the shuttle is mainly needed for the return: after a day of toasts with the house wine, nobody should get behind the wheel on poorly lit roads.

Guests at a Franciacorta wedding sometimes stay at agriturismi (farm stays) in the area, sometimes at hotels in Brescia, Bergamo or Milan. With several return destinations it is better to use two vehicles on different routes, rather than a single coach doing the rounds of all the hotels late at night. The choice between a minibus and a Gran Turismo coach therefore depends on the number of destinations as well as the number of guests.

Guests from Milan and from the airports

For lake weddings many guests come from abroad and land at Malpensa or Linate. Malpensa is about 50 km from Milan, and in the morning the journey into the city can take an hour or more: if guests are going straight to the lake, a dedicated group transfer from Malpensa or Linate for the airport pick-up is the better option. We monitor flight times and, if a flight is delayed, the vehicle waits without you needing to tell us.

On request we provide English-speaking drivers, useful with groups of international guests. At weddings our drivers wear formal dress. For the couple, the parents or the witnesses who want a separate car, there is our chauffeur service in Milan.

Late-night returns: to the lake and to Milan

The return is the most delicate part. A format that works well has a first run in the middle of the evening for families and older guests and a second at the end of the party. If some of the guests are going back to Milan, we organise a dedicated run straight to the city, separate from the one for the lake hotels. Late-night returns are a service we provide regularly, 7 days a week, public holidays included.

If the party goes on longer, extra hours have an hourly rate already stated in the quote. The vehicles at our Milan base are all Euro 6.

How to request a quote for a wedding shuttle

For the quote, give us the date, the towns and addresses of the ceremony and reception, the guests’ hotels, the number of people on each leg, any boat crossings and the expected end time of the party. If there is a wedding planner, we can coordinate directly with them.

For May, June, September and October, book at least 3 months ahead. To get a sense of costs, our guide to coach hire prices in Milan gives indicative figures for a full day.

If instead you are getting married in Rome or at a villa in the Castelli Romani, we organise the guest shuttle for villa weddings from our base in Via Ugo Forti.

Phone: +39 06 4882027. The permitted stop is in Piazza Cavour, for a maximum of 15 minutes; that is why guests need to be gathered before the vehicle arrives.

Where does the coach wait during a wedding in Como?

In the areas the council designates for tour coaches: the short-stop bay in Viale Innocenzo XI, with the engine switched off, or the long-stay areas in Piazza Atleti Azzurri d’Italia and Via Regina Teodolinda. For villas outside the town, we agree a nearby waiting point with the venue.

Do tour coaches need a permit for a wedding on Lake Como?

To enter the Como ZTL, yes: the authorisation is free and is obtained online before entering or within 48 hours. In the other lakeside towns the rules may differ, and we check them case by case based on the address.

Is a Gran Turismo coach or several minibuses better for a lake wedding?

For the journey from Milan or the airport, the Gran Turismo is more practical. For villas on the shores, where the roads are narrow, minibuses or a transfer point are often needed. A combination of the two is the usual solution.

Do you also organise shuttles for Franciacorta weddings with guests in Milan?

Yes. We plan an outward run from Milan and one or two return runs at the end of the evening, split by destination if guests are staying in different towns.

Couples organising a wedding on Lake Como usually have guests spread across three different places: some in hotels in Milan, some in hotels on the lake, some flying in the day before.
